Germany

  • Seattle-Man,
What a coincidence, we're moving to Seattle from Germany and you're moving from Seattle to Germany! We'll be moving in December, any pointers/tips to give? I've heard that the weather is bad?

If you are moving here as a civilian, i.e. not working for the g'ment, prepare yourself for the taxes. The average German pays around 40% (my wife); so I speak from experience. Also prepare youself for the "Open Sexual" attitude, we as Americans are pretty prudish if you ask me. We can show a guy on tv getting shot 20 times with a machine gun, but we file a lawsuit on a network for showing a boob. German, well most Europeans are very open about sexuality. Only difference is that in the States, it's taboo or underground.

I wasn't my intent to scare you but Germany is a crowded country, the mentality is that you have to walk on the next guy/gal to get ahead. It's evident in everything they do. If you drive to the store, the guy behind you is upset because YOU are in his spot. When you get to the store, they'll run through you to get in just because YOU might buy that last bottle of o.j.. Competitive is an understatement here, common courtesy leaves when you leave the states.

I've been here for a total of 15 years, part civilian part military. I speak German fluently, but feel that it's time to go home. I would say that the attitude towards Americans has changed for the worse since Dubya's war started. Gonna take some time to repair.
