  • Not a sad country

I am resident in Germany since 22 years ago, I live in the south western part, an amazing area called Balck Forest, close to Switzerland and France. I did arrive here when I was very young and did married a german woman. Because of my job I am often in contact with a lot of people and I have a also tons of friends from here so I can say they are not sad as said in some message back. This is a land who was rebuilt from the ashes and this is really admiring, this country is open for competitive people yes but also for the artist, so they are sensible and appreciate feelings ans sensibility. Germany is a vibrant country full of live and the people is really enchanting and have a special shine from inside. They are even more warm and lovely than the people think and some are not able to see. For that I am sorry. The wonderful is just that they respect each other and also they respect the law. So they are able to leave peacefully and without fighting. I would not leave this lovely country where is my heart.

  • Proud brazilian so easy to defeat German Economy

Your optimism is good but don't go to the extreme of cheating yourself...quite difficult for a southamerican country to reach such big levels from Germany, even in the middle of the crisis. Don't you know that Germany is the third economy of the world???

I am sorry for your bad experience in Germany, really.. but that is not the experience of all. I want to say that America is a country without identity at all, plenty of racism and violence, is a big market of prostitution and drugs and unsatisfied people, that can be seen just by looking in their faces, specially in NY where the people is always angry. What is worse they always want to be kings of the world... America sucks...

it is not optimism. it is realism. all that i said is based in statistics .i did not create anithing. the data about brazilian economy is a public information.if you can count, you will see that i am right when i said that brazil will defeat germany in the economy in less than 20 years.
i feel sorry if it hurt your german nazi feelings: a nation of mixed races(brazil)superior in economy upon your damned germany...
my apologies, but we will go on growining.

  • Sad, Sad Germany again

Brian, of course you feel normal. You are in the right place, plenty of people like you. Enjoy it! (by the way, the school shooter also felt normal).
PP: you do not have to invite me to leave, I AM leaving, and I said so. I am always ready to leave countries in which people react with xenophobia and and answers like yours when they have to face critics. So thank you for reminding me about how right I am to cancel the three years left in my visa and going to a better place.
To Want To Continue Living Here: What you say is sweet and I am very happy that you feel happy here. I respect your opinion as I expect you respect mine. Yes, as I said in my email, there are plenty of wonderful / wunderbar things in Germany, especially in Western and South Germany. But I also have MANY German friends living abroad, and they are honest enough to tell me that they ran out, not only of the cold, but also of stiff, sad and depressing compatriots. Some of them have come back to Germany after many years working abroad, invited by prominent German universities to occupy directing positions. They have survived months, maybe a year, before leaving again. The reason?: They love home, but they are tired of people who do not dare to call them by their first names and who kneel in front of them because they are "Professors". I respect different traditions and I am ALWAYS grateful to the countries which welcome me, even if they have done, like Germany, also horrible things to me (Brian, my very kind and German lawyer also won a lawsuit against the very German hospital who mistreated me... and he is German... does he have to visit a shrink too?) However, I have the permanent feeling that this country is always ready to attack the different again. No matter how much schools hammer on their children's mind that they have to respect differences. No matter how much people respect the law here. The tensions continue in a subtle, subterranean way. Sad people do not like shiny people, and sooner or later they try to fix it. Several posts ago, I saw a message from an alleged German (at least he signed something like Proud German, or German) telling another person in this forum: "People like you should not be allowed to reproduce....". Sounds familiar? omg)

  • Germany is a sad, life-hating and soulless country!

Some time ago I wanted just to die; because I have lived in Germany. There is no point living in Germany.
There are ugly and sad people all over the country. Some may hide it better than others. That is the fact.
The person who says most Germans are monsters is kind of right.. Living in Germany is causing you alot of depression and if not now then after some time. There is no German that is worth knowing him; there are mostly, only sad
and depressed people in Germany. That's cause I wanted to commit suicide. Nothing you gain in Germany is worth anything. You could live in Germany for three hundred years and maybe get to know very very few close friends and generally kind people. After many years I have to sum up that Germany is NO place for good men; you have
the life of a psycho; lonesome, controlled by the government, spied at nearly every step you make; women hate and control men and are generally very selfish, ugly after short time and you as a guy have to give everybody an
explanation for what you do and what you don't do.

Germans are anti-life; I mean absolutely anti-life in the negative kind of way;...they begrudge you everything and don't like being free; only talk about freedom but when TSHTF the all go back to mummy government to moan and groan. There is literally NOTHING worthwhile being or even living in Germany; that is
the worst mistake you could ever make....living in Germany for a length of time. You mybe get to know some glimpses of poeples' lives but that'S it. Most of them would strangle you with their eyes if they could; the others ignore you as a human as if they are kings on earth. Germans hate life and have to flee from their
own country in order to enjoy only the most little pleasures...Germany as a country is pathetic and contributes NOTHING to the world. All the contributed really could have been done by somebody else. Germany is one ugly shithole, because the people make what is worth in a country and German people are one ugly bunch; no soul and no heart. Money oriented to the bone and no humour; sad faces all over the country and
    Stasi-control to the core....
It is ugly....all of you who read my sentences...stay far far away from Germany..Germany hates, literally
HATES it's own population but they don't say it. They lie to their own population....it's a very ugly country. People have no soul and you will feel it in the air. Stay away from Germany and never ever plan to build your personal life on this soil. This will be pathetic.
Every good-hearted, inner vibrating foreigner, please stay away from this hating society and ugly shithole.

For those of you who are still staying in Germany at that time....LEAVE, leave as fast as you can.
And for those who plan to be in Germany....don't go there. Treat it like aplace where pocks and the plaque are residing...let it rot...leave it and never try to get to know a German very intimately...you will never fully get to know
    a German in your lifetime.
You won't miss a thing in your live by never being in Germany, either short or long term!!!

My regards to all of you.

wrong, like anyone in my country who has gone to university, I know a great deal about Germany especially early Romanticism, Elias's civilisation theory and the Germans, 1914-1945 and the history of the BRD. I know a lot about Hegel, Marx, Mann, Fassbinder and cultural despair. But I also know that most Germans know a lot less than I do. It's a bit like going to Greece and expecting the newspaper kiosk owner to be an expert on Plato - in actual fact he's a chain-smoking, heavy-drinking macho. Europe's classical days are long over, now they are trying to be world leaders in "social values" - after getting together to murder millions just a few decades ago. Especially Germany! But thhey keep getting shocks, like the PISA shock for example. Every night the Tageschau makes me laugh (asides from having the day's news read by a virgin!!) hahahahha! • why so much hate ?

why do so many people here attack each others because of their nationality ? would it not be better if people would work together and try to understand each other ? i think many of the anti-german post are written by people who are not american. just because someone writes in english and chooses and english nick doesn't mean that he is american. Maybe in some cases they are disappointed immigrants.I have lived in the US for some time and I really like the people and the American culture.

@ proud Brazilians: You accuse Germans of being racist but you generalize about an entire country.. so you are racist yourself. Many Brazilians try to immigrate to Germany and Europe but almost nobody from Germany wants to immigrate to Brazil. Maybe some day your economy will be bigger than Germany's economy but I don't care.... You also have more than twice as many people so of course your economy should be bigger.

If it was true that 40% of germans have a negative opinion about brazil there are still 60% who have a positive opinion. Did you ever think about that ? maybe it's true that some german people are too criticial of others countries. but they are usually also very critical of themselves. it's true that many germans are often too negative and complain too much.

@ laughing foreigner: Germany was in the upper third of the PISA ranking. I think it's not that bad. Only the german media made it soundd like it was such a catastrophe. but actually many other european countries were like one or two places above or below germany. so germany is in the european average.

I stayed in Paris, Montpellier and Clermont Ferrand (I have lived there several times during the last 10 years, for different reasons, work, family and research). I am currently studying in a co-sponsored programme in one of the best French universities (but still living in Germany). Parisians are definitely not as understanding as Western Germans if you do not speak their language properly (though in the South and the East that does not happen) and Parisians need tourists but mistreat them - true. The rest.... just lovely. France is the country of joy, beauty and warm (to me). Your question about France opens the door for me to post another comment: have you noticed that even there are many critics to other European countries in the other international fora of Just Landed, very few say that those countries are "sad", or "pessimistic", or "negative"? So there might be some true in there. Regarding Alex's comment on not many Germans living in Brazil... sorry Alex but have you ever put a foot on Brazil's Northeast? Or in Sao Jose dos Campos, near Sao Paulo? Or in Brasilia? Or in Rio? Or.... wherever you go, PLENTY of German professors, engineers, scientists.... all running away from the cold, and looking for kind, sweet people and a mild weather. Paradise, in spite of poverty and inequality. That, without counting, as Proud Brazilian says.... the 3.000.000 German descents living in the Rio Grande do Sul state, in which people still speak German in many occasions (I have been doing research on that there, two years ago). However, Proud Brazilian, Alex, and all those who use this forum for angry exchanges, let us lower our level of tension omg) Every country have its own virtues and things to be solved. What is true, however, is that some emerging countries will have a very important say in the world politics and economy very soon: Brazil, India, and of course China....and the old Continent will have to start to take them as serious partners in dialogue. Nothing to worry, though: Brazilian people are really tolerant, and love foreigners. I have lived in Brazil as a foreign person and I have been so well treated that I consider that country my place in the world. Finally, thank you to all you posted sweet and understanding messages about my experience in a German hospital.

I think you will find most "hate" comes from the German side. You certainly know that Germany damaged its international reputation badly because of Schroeder's anti-American campaign that he used to get himself re-elected - but Iraq was a great chance for the NPD but especially the millions of German hobby left-wingers to express their bitterness and guilt about being Germans=World War 2. I never expected it when I came here but the war is still THE major aspect of Germans' and the reason behind the exaggeratedly-friendly, uncertain, distant or hostile relationships with foreigners and the major theme within Germany society. Another example: "We might have been mass-murderers but at least Germans are better-educated than the US etc?" No. = PISA-shock. When Germans start accepting themselves, they willl overcome their depression and hostility.

  • @ Ted + Ready to leave

@ Ready to leave: Yes I have actually visited Brazil once. I have visited friends in Rio but I didn't meet any German people. The immigration from Germany to Brazil took place in the past when the economical situation in Germany was very bad. Nowadays only a few rich retired people might move to Brazil because they can buy a house with a pool there for a good price. For them Brazil might seem like a paradise because they have little worries in life. If German immigrants would come to Brazil mainly to work and they would be faced with the hardship of daily work life some might also become disappointed I think. Especially if they had economic problems. So the immigration to Brazil and Germany is a bit different.

My personal experience in Brazil wasn't bad and I even met a some Brazilians who studied German. So proud Brazilians is wrong when he says all Brazilians hate Germans, I guess.

Like you said every place has it's advantages and disadvantages. German people might be in general kind of negative and a bit depressed (I think it's because of the weather, the history and the conservative media) but the good thing is that the German society is relatively tolerant, there is a low crime rate, low corruption, help for people who lost their job etc., the traffic is calm. If you don't like your stay in Germany it's ok and your personal decision.

But I get offended by generalizations like: "All Germans are rude, my people are much warmer etc." Imagine you'd invite someone to your house and he'd tell you that it really sucks and that in his house everything looks better. Or he'd tell you that he has a better character only because his ethnicity is different than yours... Would you not consider that rude ? If some people say that all Germans are unfriendly and they are much nicer it sounds to me as if they want to say that they are better only because of their nationality. Maybe some people need this feeling to blow up their low self esteem ?

In Brazil or the US people on the average might be more optimistic and talktive but those places also have their disadvantages.

@ Ted: I don't think that Germany's reputation was damaged badly because we didn't support the war in Iraq. The attack on Iraq was very unpopular in many countries around the world. Also Schröder didn't support Saddam Hussein or anything. He just said that afterwards the situation in Iraq will be more difficult. I think every country can decide on it's own whether it wants to participate in a millitairy action.

Still I think you are right when you say that some Germans are anti-American because they feel inferior to America because of Germany's history. Maybe if they talk bad about the US it makes them feel less inferior. It annoys me when people are judgemental and tell to people from abroad that only their own culture is the best. But not all Germans are ignorant and anti-American. I know that the US are a country with many educated, kind people, good food, beautiful museums, interesting and pleasant cities.

Stop blaming the nazis, they were never the problem. It's the "normal" people who voted for Hitler, who joined the army, who did what they thought was a good idea. It's the same today - it's all "gegenrechts" or "zivilcourage zeigen" ...that's just for national vanity. Most foreigners never even see a neo-nazi, but have a look at today's report about youth attitudes in Germany. I am betting money that some NPD candidate will get over the 5% hurdle for the federal election in September. Then the country will have to wake from its long sleep since 1945.

  • Germany sucks

What a horrible debate. I'm ashamed of being German, not for the stereotypes portrayed here, but much more for the Germans defending Germany in such an offensive way. Yes, of course we are rude in comparison with the Americans and yes in general we are a bunch of unhappy people. The majority are not Nazis though, sorry, but that's rubbish. If we seem more rude to foreigners than to Germans, that's in general rather a feeling of inferiority than true racism. We hear almost every day that other nations don't like us.
I have lived in several places within Europe and Asia for longer periods of time and got to know quite a few foreigners there. There wasn't a single person, who didn't go through a phase of hating the hosting country.
Germans don't be offended if someone doesn't like our country. We are in comparison to a lot of other countries people who are hard to get warm with. We have other virtues.
Foreigners: We are closed up and rude, but once you've broken through the wall, most of us are very loyal friends. Give it a try if you want, if not that's fair enough.

Well, sorry I wasn't referring to anything you said. The overwhelming majority of comments from either side are offensive.
I just don't see what good would come from someone offending those who don't like us. That would surely strengthen his/her opinion.

There are things I'm actually proud of about the German culture, there are other things I'm glad I miss out on living abroad.
In depth discussions about topics other than pop culture seem to be less part of most other cultures I have come across. But having fun and politeness are definitely not our strong points.
Anyway, I will go back to Germany because I miss the German culture.

  • pardon?

"In depth discussions about topics other than pop culture"??? can you give examples? I think you might have confused the German lack of fun culture with intellectual depth. Most discussion of Germany's role in world war two for example has been done by foreign scholars. Germany also has low liberal arts university graduation levels (the widely feared Arts degree) compared with many other countries so people don't have the intellectual training needed to discuss matters in depth - that's something for the doctor professors, after all.

  • !

    That goes too far here!
You blame me being a nazi???
    You dont know anything!!
How you dare to blame a whole nation, you guys are mad! The ppl of my gerneration that now live in germany had nothing to do with hitler and so they sure did not vote for any "rechtsparteien"
And well they never asked my attitude at those reports, youre all talking bad about a whole country even though you have never lived here or talked to one of the ppl living there.

And blaming us to be nazis because we dont hate our country is the worst rubbish i have ever heard of. Do you know we have laws against those Nazistuff and young people are taught at school, that the germans living here in the 30s and 40s indeed were all crazy and disturbed, but as i said

I can not apologize something that my ancestors did a long, long time ago. And i never say anything against jews (some of my ancestors were jewish themselves) and i never say anything against foreigners.
Yes I feel ofended when someone says im a nazi, sorry to destroy your fantasies, guys but its just not true that all germans are nazis, sure there are a few disturbed ppl living here (like they are everywhere), but at least give the normal ones a chance to prove we're not cruel racists

  • hatred does only harm

Mara, I think with their generalizations and harted against Germans those people say more about themselves than they say about Germans...

I think it's racist to say that all people who belong to a certain group or nationality are bad. Those generalizations are dangerous and they will only lead to more bad feelings and hatred. And who will gain by that ?

I have also read the study that "proud Brazilian" refers to and surprisingly it said that Germany was considered a country with a good image in many countries. So the hateful posters don't speak for their entire country even if they wish it was like that. To me the people who say racist stuff about Germans are just as bad as racists within Germany. Therefore I ignore hateful useless post and only reply to the ones who have some interesting points and constructive criticism.

I guess some racists will always hate Germans no matter what we do because for them hating others seems to be a necessity. Also Germans are not the only target of hate... Many other people and countries also get offended and insulted by haters. But in my opinion hatred harms the haters more than the people who are hated.

@ guy from Ankara: Your post is funny blunk If you like I could teach you more useful phrases in German and you could teach me some Turkish. Would you like to chat on MSN ?

@ Expat: Maybe accepting every insult will also strengthen the opinion of racist people because then they will think they can allow themselves every rudness and offense because Germans are the only ones who accept getting insulted without getting upset. I guess if the hateful poster wrote the stuff they wrote against Germans about Americans or Russians in an American or Russian forum the response would be a lot harsher.

I would like to chat, but the sad point in my life is that in a few weeks I have to write a test at my University about a subject which is a mistery to me.I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT IT.
So I have to learn now what I should have learned during the last year.Instead of learning I used to go to rock-festivals,cafes,clubs....and do other useful things.
Now I am a bit afraid of my future.I do not want to end like the guy I see every morning on the streets of Ankara, who sings turkish folk-songs and dances to it,while his friend is playing on a cheap keyboard.

I use to take a look at this thread when I stop learning for a few minutes.
I can not promise you that I will be able to continue it during the next days.

Concerning the films I have mentioned I would like to add that those german "actors" were very talented.....in their own way.

  • OECD 2006

  • Well-paid teachers, no desks
