Public schools
Education is mandatory for all children until the age of 15, and young pupils have free access to preschool (kindergarten) as written in Kazakhstan’s constitution. The school system is seen as a success, and the country has a literacy rate of over 99%.

Private education
You can find international schools in Kazakhstan for all ages, offering both British and American curriculums. Classes are usually taught with English as the first language, making the transition into a school in Kazakhstan relatively simple.

Training schools, lycees, and colleges
Students in Kazakhstan who are not planning on going to university have the option of continuing their education in training schools, lycees, and colleges to learn a trade or skillset. Students who attend one of these do however have the option to go on to university if they later decide to.

Higher education
Universities in Kazakhstan
There are around 150 universities in Kazakhstan, with quite a few of these being found in Astana and Almata. In terms of world ranking, the country does better than perhaps some Westerners would expect, with the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University being ranked at 236th in the world by Quacquarelli Symonds, a specialist in education abroad.
