best way travelling in Netherlands?

  we are 4 girls that are gonnna visit the netherlands this summer. We want to see amsterdam and other big cities, but also some smaller villages and typical dutch things, like the windmills.... To visit all, can anyone tell us what the best way is to travel in the netherlands? I've heard that travelling by train is very expensive. so mayb renting a car? or by bus?
  can anyone help us??
