Are French people ignorant or don't they know better?

• I'm a Germany woman working in a French company on a manager level. I don't speak much French yet and face day to day challenges such as gossip behind my back for being a diva??? as I don't kiss everyone in the morning (because that would be nearly 50 people) and they expect that I understand and speak their language within no time...I'm only 7 months in this country. Meetings and conversations are always kept in French and I miss out on important information on a regular base. Is that normal? I have worked in many countries but never have faced such a challenge before. Especially since I was employed with the promise that it would be no problem at all to work in this company as they are very international and everyone speaks English....
