Why is it so hard to make friends in Britain?

  • I have been living for 4 months now in England - and all my friends are foreigners!!! Why is it so hard to make British friends? Sometimes I get the impression that they prefer to stay amongst themselves. This is not really what I expected when I came here.

live in burton and the people ae very strange here.
I am a very open person but it is impossible for me to get in contakt with people. I am so dissapointed and frustrated about this. Wohnt zufaelligerweise jemand deutsches in burton on trent? Hilfe, ich vereinsame hier!

Making friends in britain is like making friends at home. It's about being open to it. Once you start talking to people most people are quite friendly.

Keep in mind cultural differences might be part of the problem. You might not understand them and the same might be true in reverse.

    Cheers.

  • Why is it so hard to make friends in Britain?

I have been living in Northernireland for 2 years now and it took a while to find some close friends. First of all, do not expect to much and be patient. Britons really like the small-talk and the chat and ask you a "Loch in den Bauch" about your family, job, car, cat dog, house... In Germany such intensive communication is probably often seen as the beginning of a long-term relationship. To find some good friends, I would recommend to join a spotsclub or a charity organisation. You can meet there native speaker more regular which is a very good basis fot a long-term friendship. Good luck!

  • shock culture?

Hello! First of all, i found this website by surfing throught the internet and i think it is very interesting and useful too, at least for me that I'd really love to travel abroad and see new opportunities....anyway, pls keep in mind about culture differences from one country to another, but at the end i think if you show to be open minded and a friendly person you will give the impression of a trustworthy and friendly person, try to join to any club like charity organisation, the gym, etc...etc...
