Calling On Customers In Germany

• Hi, I am an US Citizen and Passport holder I work for a small US company travelling to Germany in one month to attend sales conventions and call on customers in Germany. I plant to stay 3-6 months. I will stay with friends, and hotels when I travel. Will I need to applying for a resident & work permit once I arrive in Germany? Can I work for 3 months return to the US for a few weeks and then go back to Germany for 3 more months? How often can I come back and fourth form Germay to the US? Thanks for your help!!
