Was not admitted for not enough funds, how much should I take?

• I tried to visit my fiance for six months just on my passport, but was turned away because they thought I didn't have enough money to support myself. I was told to apply for a visa before I try visiting again, even for a month long trip. How much money should I take next time, and what do I need for a visa, besides a job?
