How much cash do you carry?

So I am moving to Japan soon (two months) to teach English for a year. EVERYTHING I read insists that Japanese people carry tons of cash on them. How much do you think is reasonable? A few thousand yen, more? Also, is it really that safe with all that cash?

usually i try and keep around 15000 yen with me. never had any problems with crime
