My father was a Dutch citizen, can I become one?

  • Here's my situation, my father was born and raised in the Netherlands until he moved to the U.S. when he was about 25. I'm not sure if he still retains Dutch citizenship in any way, but all of his side of the family is still living in Holland. Does anyone know if and/or how complicated, it would be for me to become a Dutch citizen myself while still keeping my U.S. citizenship if needed. I appreciate any help you have to offer. Thanks!

  • By birth

Every child born of a married Dutch father or mother automatically acquires Dutch nationality, even if he or she is born outside the Netherlands, as does the child of an unmarried Dutch mother.

NB: Children born before 1 January 1985 of a Dutch mother and a foreign father did not as a rule acquire Dutch nationality by birth.

you wouldn't be able to retain your US citizenship. Dutch citizens may hold single nationality only
