Arrogant or racist Argentinians?

It's my feeling that Argentineans are arrogant, on a cultural and personal level. Is this unique to that country, or is it a choice in behavior and thought of other Latin American people?

In my opinion, yes
I am not Argentinian but have friends from South America. Remember Argentina's culture: Mostly European background (of Caucasian persuasion), many of whom immigrated there in the early part of the century. This little item is what attracted the Nazis to Argentina. The continental neighbors of Argentina are either of Indian or African descent (Brazil). I don't have to tell you that the American majority does not have a monopoly on racism. The "R" word is everywhere, even in tango-loving Argentina. Those folks think of themselves more as European and have a lesser connection to their geographical roots. Are they snooty? In my opinion, yes.

many Argentine tourists
I'm from a region in Brazil that receives many Argentine tourists in summers, many who are wealthy. Many are arrogant, treat us and the country as exotic and primitive, and treat us blacks as though we were animals in a zoo or safari. They have a tendency to think, as a popular Argentine saying goes, that they're "Europeans born in South America by God's mistake." However, white, middle-class Brazilian immigrants in the United States have the same attitude. They, as well as the Argentines I described above, are not representative of Brazilian or Argentine cultures; they are people who could afford $1,500 tickets to come to this country. What they represent, most likely, is the racist, conservative elite we have in Latin America. Please give a second try and you'll most likely find pleasant, well-mannered Argentines in no time. By the way, tango, Argentina's most treasured export, has African origins.

never thought they were arrogant
I have known some Argentinians and never thought they were arrogant. Outspoken in their beliefs maybe, but that is not a bad thing. One of the sweetest co-workers I ever worked with was Argentinian, and she was a very caring person who would give up her lunch to someone hungry on the streets because she cared. She was quite rooted in her Latin background as well. I think you will find, like anywhere else, some are and some are not. Maybe it is an individual thing rather than a cultural thing.

ethnocentric attitude in Buenos Aires
One should distinguish between the various socio-economic classes, ethnic groups and places in argentina.
Please don't generalize. It is true that traditionally, Buenos Aires is mostly caucasian and pscale and identify more with their euopean roots or hollywood than with the other 99% of the country or latin-america in general.
I believe Buenos Aires is slowly changing with the economy and inmigration, but has a long ways to go to be truely cosmopolitan and multi-ethnic. Unfortunately, the peruvians are treated like 2nd class citizens - really a shame, since they are mostly ideal inmigrants
The rest of the country is more normal in this regard.

Argentinians no longer exist
Argentina is now a land of imported & misplaced people who do not by ANY means belong to South America. They are rude, arrogant, corrupt and racist to say the least. The original and largely extinct Argentinians were the original people of that land . It is now a country of immigrants who have no connection to the South American continent and should be deported back to where they came from.

Revolutionarian you must be comunist, you know what you need to do, MOVE to Venezuela, MOVE to CUBA and enjoy comunism there, stop using the F word, save it for FIDEL CASTRO and CHAVEZ, if you dont like democracy MOVE to a comunist country, "you gonna love it"!!!!! Going back to RACISTS ARGENTINIANS, I have a lot of friends in Buenos Aires and they are real nice people, none of them are racists as long as i know, if they discriminated USA-americans must be because americans are known to be racists too, you get what you deserve, i guess. Now, how does it feels to be discriminated? I dont know, aks americans, they are experts in discrimination.

Getting Back to The Question.....
Getting back to the original question with all rhetoric aside.... I lived in Argentina for a couple of years and plan to return permanently. To say that all Argentines are arrogant is a gross misjudgment. The same could be said about any countries inhabitants if one happened to only meet a couple of individuals and made the judgement based on said meeting.
I have met a few very arrogant Argentines but not many. Most are incredibly friendly, caring, and people with great senses of humor. Argentina is a great country regardless of anyone's opinion or political beliefs.
Getting off the subject, I am happy to say that not all Argentines spew hatred todwards North Americans. To the contrary, they are almost all very friendly about it. That isn't to say they will not tease you about being a gringo but it is typically in fun. The exceptions are the Chavistas and leftist leaning individuals that favor socialism or even communism. They seem to have a difficult time communicating with anyone with an opposing opinions. Case in point: Hugo Chavez who has a tendency to accuse anyone who opposing opinions to him of being ignorant or as an enemy. It should be remembered that Chavez was elected by the people of Venezuela. I say live and let live. If they want socialism or communism let them have it. It means nothig to me.Esteban de Gringolandia 26 dic 2007, 01:06 - Denunciar -
not all
Last year I stopted in Buenos Aires for the first time in a long while, most people looked serious and alooft not like most smiling americans i'm used to now, any way on my way to the airport i had luch at a small place in Patio Bullrich. I sat next to this guy and started talking when the waitress assume we were together, we had a long chat about my life in the US,and about his jos and family. Afterwards I had to leave for the airport he insisted in paying for my lunch. (reminded me of my dad) Another time in Cordoba my husband and i went to this country restourant, when my husband finish every thing they broght him seconds, and desert on the house, and told us to go have a siesta parked under a peach tree before driving back. it was in Colonia Caroya. (im argentinean but live un US)

racisim
Im argentinean and i live in the us. I m married to an exceptionally great american men, but let me tell you his fammily although good and kind in many ways, is also so racist, like i neverd heard in argentina, also they say that the US is the greatest country on earth repeaterd constantly like a mantra. if it was up to them they would go back 150 years (except they're ansestors were still in germany) . The worst racists I know are italian americans (like in argentina). as im caucasian, i get to hear the "spirit" of america. But there is hidden arrogance and racisim in every culture, korean, jappanesse, french you name it. I never met a chinesse mother who did not think there kids were smarter than the rest to the point of making them study 24/7 to proove thier point.

And Javier more Natzis came to the US than to Argentina, some brought by the US

Definatly arrogant... Coming into our country and bringing that doesn't make a good name for themselves. I don't understand what goes on in there mind that makes them so superior to anyone. Also, not a good way to live... living with arrogance and they probably judge everything also. Going through life judging and caring what people think. Will get you knowwhere. If you can't do what you want to do, you are not living YOUR life. Racism is everywhere
I'm Argentinean and yes, we are arrogant, racists, and a lot of negative things; that’s because we belong to the human race. We also have a lot of good things too, and the proof is that more and more, people from around the world come to live in our country.
I guess we seem to be more arrogant or racist that others because we are very outspoken. I lived in the US for more than 9 years, and I’ve seen racism in every culture: Americans towards Mexicans and any other dark skin latino, Mexicans, Africans and Philippines also are racists towards themselves (the lighter the skin color, the better their social status is). And I just mentioned those countries as an example, that’s all. Also the religious intolerance there is in the world, especially in USA in unbelievable. I’m gay, and I have more freedom in Argentina than what I had in Jesusland (USA) with all the bible thumpers.
As you can see, racism, discrimination, intolerance, corruption (NY Mayer Spitzer) are part of the human nature (and I hate to admit it, but that includes me).
There is no perfect land; some just hide their s*** very well.

All of us are racist, as Hernan says some hide it well.
Argentinians kill for being the center of attention.
They live teasing. They adore the "British humor" because of their "detachment" (coolness). They love Italians, as the tender Ugo Tognazzi-always getting his shrewd whim.
They want to be funny, to be loved, to be liked.
In that permanently-teasing state of mind, they "deride" everybody, so they look arrogant.
But they'd give you his shirt. Just befriend any of them and you'll see.
They will get out of their way, to assure you find yours. Just ask anybody for directions and you'll see.
About arrogance, I know arrogants, but I mean A-R-R-O-G-A-N-T-S, from every country of the world. You would not believe such arrogance I witnessed, from such bottom of the jar samples, and what can I say...
Ain't I being arrogant now?
It is not arrogance what it counts, it is working for a better society TOGETHER.
Argentines in particular, look arrogant all right... for the arrogants.Timothy 08 jun 2008, 07:59 - Denunciar -

the arrogance is a cloak
I think that the arrogance of the Argentine is purely a cloak upon an insecurity. A lack of identity based on being émigrés who are displaced and marginal in the world map. Their subordinate positions is unfortunate. It demands that they create a group that they can also subordinate, those being the remainder of indigenous people whom they have leant little from or tired to engage with. No different from any other Colonial culture.

I am from Argentine and all I can say is there are some people out there that make us look bad, by coming across as racist, which most of us are not...Even though Argentina is comprised by a large number of white people that immigrated from Europe there is also a large number of Indians(natives) and mestizos. They are argentinians as well with equal rights...so don't believe everything you read...Argentina is beautiful country and so are its people.

Well..I'm European that grew up mostly in Greece and Macedonia.I'm mixed between Russian, Spanish and Greek and I'm blonde with blue eyes, Caucasian. Honestly, you can't generalize like this. People are people everywhere. If that's the case why am I not dark like most of the Greeks? Believe it or not no one looked at me sideways ever for being different there. I never felt anyone ever discriminated against me or anyone else in Europe.I live now in US and I can't believe the level of racism and discrimination that's going on in this country. But to hear that this is what's going on in Latin America, I almost can't believe it. Argentinians must be hiding here because all latin guys and girls I've met (inlcuding Argentinians) have been super nice to me

Why more tourists do not visit
Just reading some of the comments written here by Argentines, one can see the extent of their xenophobia--towards everyone in fact--and one can only feel sorry for such an intolerant and almost inhumane country that, to be frank, has such a bad reputation everywhere outside Argentina. The unfriendliness of the porteños is well-known and that is why more Europeans do not visit. Of course, it may be the case that they would not be welcome, and so perhaps Argentines are happy that they do not visit, but Argentina does suffer in terms of tourism, and therefore economically, because of its shun-them attitude which makes them a byword internationally for "inhospitality".

I live in New York and a lot of the Argentines I've met are arrogant. They go on and on about how they're white and different from the other Latin Americans, they think they're better than every other country (unless we're talking about Germany or Sweden, because those countries are white enough to get the Argentines' respect)...what's most sad is that a lot of them have a noticeable amount of indian admixture and they simply ignore it. Also, they talk a lot. However, for some strange reason, the women act a lot nice than the men.

answer to Javier about argentineans racism
Javier:
Argentineans are not the only caucasians in South America. You mentioned Brasi as indian and african. You are wrong Southern Brazil is as European as Argentina with a great number of germans. The german emigration to Argentina started in earlies 1800, not after 2nd world. Same with Irish and Welsh emigration. Italians came a little later. There are less racism in Argentina than in other Latin American countries. Many indians from other Latin Am countries went to Argentina to learn how to read and write (free of charge, of course). They were unable to attend schools in their own country. Do not talk about people so freelyPatricia 21 jun 2009, 02:09 - Denunciar -

Which is funny, considering there number one export Tango-has African origin and roots HA! Not to mention there other export Futbol and Maradona, whom looks so indigenous, not so european. They like to think they are european (because for some reason that is better?). Although they have european immigrants like the rest of the world there percentage is no higher than Brazil (check wikipedia), and we do not walk with an attitude. We all are humans and bleed the same! They are delusional and have known many. The good thing about Argentina is that the economy is poor, and you can get really good deals there. Did I mention that Brazil is consider to be one of the fastest growing economy in the world, and is the strongest Economy in Latin America (This also includes Spain). Just saying.
