NemID

Your electronic signature in Denmark

Denmark is a modern country with more and more services going online. NemID (EasyID) is a legally binding electronic ID that you can use to sign in to most public organisations, banks and some private organisations’ online services.

How to use

NemID  is a combination of three things - a NemID number, password, and a series of disposable single-use codes (also called a code card). You can have these set of codes as a code list, token (a small electronic device that gives you the needed number), or in a phone app. As your NemID is equal to a legally binding signature, you should keep your details private and secure.

When you are required to identify yourself online (e.g. logging into your bank, viewing your tax details), a window will appear where you have to insert your ID number, password and unique single-use code.

How to apply

Applying for a NemID  is pretty easy. You need to be over 15 years old, have a Central Person Register (CPR) number and a photo ID. There are several ways you can apply.

Apply through your bank

Applying through your bank is probably the easiest and most hassle-free way. Contact your bank for further details.

Apply online

If you have a Danish passport or driver’s licence, you can obtain the ID online .

Applying personally

If you don’t have a Danish passport, driver’s license or bank account, you will have to apply in person at a citizen service center  (borgerservice). Reserve a time at the center and bring a valid photo ID (passport, driver’s license) and a document stating your CPR number (eg. your yellow health insurance card).

At the appointment, you will have to present these ID documents and answer 2 to 4 identity security check questions based on the your personal information stored in the Civil Registration System (CRS).

If you are new to Denmark, you probably won’t have enough details in the CRS to confirm your identity, so you will need to bring an attesting witness who can prove your identity to your appointment. An attesting witness has to be older than 18 years old, have a photo ID, CPR number and be willing to sign a solemn declaration under penalty of law.

Activating your NemID

After you have requested a NemID, you will receive a letter containing the instructions on how to activate your ID. You can also read the instructions here . If you apply for you NemID through your bank, they will tell you how to activate the ID.
