Finding accommodation

How to start your search

If you don’t know Ecuador well already then you should try and explore a little before you choose where to settle. Apart from the big differences between towns and cities, Ecuador has three completely different climatic zones, each with a distinct culture and feel.

It’s also possible to start looking before you arrive. Many properties are advertised online, providing a useful way of getting to know your options before making the big move.

All of the websites below have good range of accommodation for rent, and are a good place to start.

An effective method for those with some basic Spanish will be to simply ask around. Word of mouth can be as good a way as any for advertising apartments, so setting up in an area and making it known that you’re house hunting could encourage people to come to you.

If you don’t want to rely on an estate agent then another, more dynamic approach is to keep your eyes peeled for signs on buildings that say ‘se alquila’ (to let). Calling the attached number should put you in touch with the landlord who can then show you the house or apartment. If your Spanish is only basic it is a good idea to bring someone along to interpret to avoid any confusion.

You might also consider checking the classifieds section of local newspapers, providing of course, you’re already in the area where you want to rent.
