Job perspectives for foreigners in Austria

Once you have managed to get the required permits, the hardest part is over. The economic situation in Austria is relatively healthy and it is therefore possible to find a good job within a reasonable time.

The official unemployment rate in January 2017 was 5.7%, placing Austria among the countries with the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union. Though it can be hard to find a job in Austria, the opportunities are much greater than in countries like Greece and Spain, where unemployment rates are at 23% and 18.2% respectively.

The kind of job you are searching and where you want to work and live in Austria will affect your chances. In general the better your education and work experience the better your chances. Though English is widely spoken in business, a strong knowledge of German is virtually essential for almost all fields of work. Eastern European languages like Slovenian and Hungarian may also be useful, as they are the official languages of certain Austrian provinces.
