Thai banks and currency

Introduction

There are many national and international banks in Thailand such as Bangkok Bank, Citibank or Deutsche Bank. Most banks have English language websites. It is advised that you take a look at several of these before deciding which bank suits you most.

The currency in Thailand is the Baht. This year (2010), one Baht is about 3 US cents. Check the Siam commercial bank website  for the current exchange rate.

Baht notes are available in many colours and sizes (blue, red etc.). One Baht is subdivided into 100 Satang.

Banks in Thailand

There is a wide range of national and international banks in Thailand. The most popular banks among expatriates are Citibank , Deutsche Bank  and HSBC Thailand . HBSC tends to be popular with expatriates as it does not require an annual minimum salary.

The banking sector in Thailand, however, is ruled by big Thai national banks such as Bangkok Bank , Siam Commercial Bank  and Krung Thai Bank . To open an account with these banks, you must earn a minimum salary of 50,000 -150,000 Baht per annum. These banks are also popular amongst expatriates.

Opening hours of Thai banks

Banking hours are generally from 08:30-15:30, Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. However, some branches may be open at the weekend. Check the business hours of your chosen bank when opening an account.
