international text messaging

• I am new with the GSM network, and am wondering if anyone can tell me if text messaging is possible from Barcelona to the US. If so does it charge both parties to both, send and recieve a text? I will most likely be working with a Tri-band phone with a SIM card. Hope to hear from someone soon. Thanks.
