Guidelines to work in the Nederlands

1. When one first arrives in Holland to live, one is required to register with the Foreign Police (Vreemdelingenpolitie). The Foreign Police office is usually located in the police station (Politieburo) of larger towns, or in city hall (Gemeentehuis) of smaller towns. In larger cities, you may have to make an appointment first before visiting their office.

You must provide the Foreign Police with the following documents:
Copy of passport valid for at least one year.
Two color passport photos, 3cm x 4cm, with a three-quarter turn of the head (Passport photos from a photo machine are NOT acceptable).
Employer's statement, verifying your employment.
Proof of medical insurance.
Social security number (sofinummer).
2. Registration Tax Office (obtaining a sofi-number)
Before you can start working in Holland you need a sofi-number. You can get it at the Tax Office. It is not necessary to make an appointment but we advise you to go early.
To reach the Tax Office you take metro 50 to station Sloterdijk. You leave the station at the back. Walk straight ahead towards the huge building in front of you. That is the Tax Office (Belasting Dienst). Don’t forget your passport!

3. Obtaining a Dutch Health Insurance
Under the Compulsory Health Insurance Act of Holland you are obliged to insure yourself and your family against medical costs if your income is below a certain limit. You can find out from the Human Resources Department how high the limit is at present. On the 1st of November of each year the government fixes the limit for the following year.
If you fall under the provisions for compulsory insurance, you should apply for a Public Health Insurance Fund (Ziekenfonds).
Public (Ziekenfonds)
You can arrange your public health insurance through your Employer and he has actually an agreement with the insurance company . When you subscribe with this company you will receive a discount of 7% on you additional insurance premiums. The Human Resources Department can provide the application forms.
If your basic income is above the limit you are not obliged to insure yourself under the Compulsory Health Insurance Act. However you are strongly advised to take care of a private health insurance.
Private
You can arrange your private health insurance through your Employer and he has actually has an agreement with one of the insurance company’s.
4. Obtaining a Dutch Account number
