living in Kuwait - dressing, leisure

Hey mates
I have received a decent job offer from a good company in Kuwait. Before I take up this offer, I would like to seek clarification
1. Would my wife need to dress herself up in an Abhaya to go out to the malls
2. Is consumption of alcohol banned as in Saudi Arabia.
3. If we can purchase alcohol, do we need a liquour permit as we need in Dubai. What are the norms for securing such a permit
4. Are there cinemas in Kuwait
Please do lend me a hand in making this deceision14 Jun 2009, 03:55 NetGypsy

women and living in kuwait
Hi, I am an American woman and I can tell you that no your wife will not have to wear a covering. She can dress as she normally would but tank tops and shorts are frowned upon. Otherwise skirts at knee length are acceptable as well as capris.
As far as alcohol..there is none. Dubai is a rather different place in regards to alcohol. You might find someone who will sell you something that was smuggled in or home made but it will be way over priced or you will not know exactly what it is. PLUS it's illegal and really not worth the risk. An affordable weekend trip to Dubai or Bahrain is a common thing amongst westerners and is pretty affordable as the airlines always have great specials. This is the best way to have a drink if you like.
Otherwise Kuwait isn't such a bad place to live. It is rather expensive for a family with school aged kids though.adma 14 Jun 2009, 07:30 - Report -
forgot one thing
Oh and yes there are cinemas BUT the sex scenes are edited out so the movies are rather choppy. You can always get the newest movies though from a "dvd guy" but the quality may not be the best and of course you will not have the big screen

Dressing in Kuwait
Hi, I will be in Kuwait to interview for a position as a university professor. Is a pants suit (arms covered) appropriate for business wear or must I wear a skirt?
Thanks, in advance for any light you can shed on this issue.RM 31 Jul 2009, 05:47 - Report
