my Japanese co-worker didn´t like a present

okay something really strange happened. i am a woman working in a Japanese company. my one coworkr has been really helpful getting me settled in the company and at home (even went to the real-estate office with me). as a thank you present i bought him a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label because he likes scotch. i wrapped it up in a nice white paper and put a colored bow on it. when he got it he acted real funny. wasn´t appreciative at all. is alcohol an inapporpriate gift in japan? was it just inappropriate coming from a woman?

office & women
some japanese men are just skittish around women in the office. maybe the present was too forward for him?

White Paper
White paper on a gift is associated with death.
