  • I'm actually really sorry to have provoked this discussion. I never said that we are more educated or better thinkers. My only personal impression is that people tend to discuss "deeper" subjects more often. Of course that is a horrible generalization and I have also met a lot of people in other countries who are just the same. And yes, my impression is probably very much biased, since I judge based on the people that surround me and not on statistics. I wouldn't know were to find statistics, which compare the main subject of discussions in coffee breaks between countries.
    I believe that Germany still has quite a hierarchical system. Students get divided at age +-ten into "intellectual" groups, which are in effect social groups. If I have one critic about the German education system; it is elitist. I believe actually that students at the Gymnasium get a good basic knowledge, which doesn't need to hide behind other nations. The problem is that the majority of students finish school early and don't get such a broad educational background.
