Getting a visa
Nearly all foreign visitors to China will need a visa. Visa forms are available for download from the embassy at www.chinese-embassy.org.uk. In general, you need to apply for a visa in person at the Chinese Embassy (31 Portland Place, London. Tel. 090 0188 0808) before you leave.
The embassy is only open in the mornings, between 9.00 am and 12.00 pm - and it is best to get there before 9 to avoid long queues. A completed form, a passport photo and your passport with a blank double page page in it are required. Please also note that your passport must be valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry into China. You can normally collect your passport after three days, but if you pay £15 extra, you can pick it up the next day, or £20 extra, the same day.
Applications can also by made from the Chinese Consulates General in Manchester (0161-2248672) or Edinburgh (0131-3164789).
Cash or Postal order only (pay to the Chinese Embassy). Personal Cheque is not acceptable.
Pay on collection. No refund if the visa is turned down or cancelled.
Business visas
If you want a business visa, you need to bring an invitation letter/fax from a Chinese governmental department or government-authorised company. For a multiple-entry visa, the invitation letter must be original. A single or double-entry visa is usually valid for entry within three months from the date of issue. Multi-entry visas are normally valid for six months and only issued according to official invitation letters for business visitors.
Types of business visa:
* Single entry visa: valid for three months from issue. For a single entry visa you should count one week to get it done, including an invitation letter.
* Double entry visa: only valid for three months after issue, and the two visits have to made within three months.
* Six month multiple entry visa. To get one you have to have been to China before and be able to provide a photocopy of your last visa from your passport. Multiple entry visas are valid for six months from when they are issued. It is not possible to apply in advance for a start date in the future. For a multiple entry visa allow two weeks in total from start to finish, including getting a letter of invitation and then having the visa processed by the Chinese embassy.
Cost:
Visas cost £30 for a single entry visa, £45 for a double entry, £60 for a 6-month, multiple-entry visa and £90 for a 12-month one. That's for British citizens.
We do not recommend getting your visa in Hong Kong, unless you are desperate (visas can be obtained overnight), in case the rules allowing this were to change suddenly. Neither do we recommend business visitors getting a tourist visa and hoping they can get away with it. Such an approach is illegal.
Extending your visa: To extend your visa, head to the foreign affairs section of the local Public Security Bureau. The cost varies, but expect to pay around Yn250 (about £20).
