Finding a family Doctor in Toronto
-
I have called over a dozen family doctors in Toronto but they are not taking any new patients. This is insane! Where can I find a family doctor?

%100 Canadian...Vs Not Stop abusing the system
I am tired of seeing people abusing the health care system. I've heard of people going cause they have a cold, or sore throat, sore whatever. Sometimes, you just have to toughen up and keep in mind somebody else may have more serious issues than you while waiting in line. I for one, don't go to the "Dr, or walk-in" clinic unless I'm completely desperate. I am a %100 aboriginal canadian, without a family doctor. You don't hear me complaining about immigrants. "Canadians" waste as much of the systems resources as much as the next guy. I am tired of this and it has to stop. I think they make it soo difficult for everyone so that people get the point that they just can't have what they want, whenever they want it and nor should they. Be grateful for what you have or get out of this country and go complain elsewhere! You'll find a Doctor if you look hard enough. My search continues...

Canadian healthcare sucks
I have a severe illness and have been waiting almost one year, yes, one full year to see a specialist. My family doctor refuses to update tests that have not been done in you guessed it, a year ago. Sometimes even when one has a family doctor, healthcare is not guaranteed. Good luck everyone.

medical doctors
I am a medical doctor from the caribbean planning to migrate soon to Canada but reading the blogs online suggests that i might be making a mistake. The requirements that the authorities impose on you to be registered and the fact that the doctors in canada seem to be not as good as the ones back home makes me wonder about this free health care system

Bureaucratic
Canadians love playing red tapes to make them feel like "somebody", sad ignorant idiots that probably can achieve nothing in all of their lifetime, the easy targets to play big are the immigrants.

Family doctor woes
Recently, my sister and I came down with a cold and a serious sinus infection. My family doctor was on vacation, so we went to see another doctor, but this doctor refused to see me unless I signed forms naming him as my family doctor. He also refused to see my sister at all, since she haven't been seen him in 4yrs. At the time I was too sick to think, so I signed. This doctor took 5 seconds to say there is nothing wrong and gave me a prescription for the sinus infection. Unfortunately, after 3 weeks I still have a sinus infection. Such incompetence!
I will go back to my original family doctor and see if I will be accepted again.Don't know what to do. 07 Jun 2009, 09:43 - Report -
Health Care Connect
check this out: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/ms/healthcareconnect/public/index.html
The program refers people without a regular family health care provider to physicians and nurse practitioners who are accepting new patients in their community.K 19 Jun 2009, 09:55 - Report -
kt and al, we need private family doctor for sure. two systems.
I'v been working in USA and contrary to many Canadian believes health care I received is the best ever. My family doctor is very thourough and my dentist called my home every time after my visit, personally. I had many test ordered from my family doctor to make sure what's wrong with my digestion system. I must forget to thanks to those USA doctors untile I move to Canada. Some of the doctors in Canada are very cold towards patients. It is difficult to have my family doctor believe I need a diagnostic which is beyong his knowledge. What his job looks like financial minister of canada to save budget, not a health care doctor. Sorry, I feel so sad for canadians.

Canada does not suck. It is not a third world country. Please visit the starving, dying people of Africa and tell them you have it just as bad in Canada.
Unfortunately, good medical care in Canada is not as easy to obtain as some make it seem, and as many eager, naive and often misinformed immigrants believe it will be. Getting good medical care requires being very proactive in finding a family doctor, often through contacts which immigrants may be unfairly lacking. You don't need to be friends with a doctor, but your friends and colleagues may be able to tell you when their doctor is taking new patients. Doctors do take new patients regularly, especially in better serviced areas like Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa (you would have far greater difficulty in Northern Ontario for example). The thing is they often will not post the fact they are taking new patients publicly because they do not want to be flooded with requests.
It is difficult to deal with the fustrations of finding a doctor, being proactive in having your medical concerns addressed properly and getting the referals you want. As fustrating as this is please keep in mind that Canadians value what they see as politeness. If you are seen as being too bossy or demanding you will all too often not get the assistance you want and may desperately require. Be polite, respectful and firm. You may think you are already doing this but the number of comments on here describing hatred for the country, government, medical system and medical professionals indicates an enormous anger and fustration that may come through in your dealings with these professionals. They deal with a lot of angry people and may not be eager to deal with more.
No one, 100% Canadian or fresh in the country should walk around with an arrogant sense of entitlement. Also, saying "Canada belongs to the native people" is not respectful of native people. I have some native heritage, most Canadians going back several generations in the country do. But using them to justify your own entitlement does nothing to help them get what they deserve. Nothing. If you really felt that only native people were entitled to Canada you wouldn't have come here. If you felt that and came anyway you are no better than others who came here. Very few people here were among those fighting the natives 300 years ago, and many of the voyageurs and others exploring (and exploiting) the natives back then also had children with them.
Good luck getting the medical treatment you and your family require.alsa88@gmail.com 18 Aug 2009, 09:26 - Report
