Although speaking English is a desirable skill for all workers in Cambodia, learning a few phrases of the local language (Khmer) can be invaluable when looking for work.
Those seeking informal employment in hospitality or teaching can consult the classified pages of the Cambodia Daily and Phnom Penh Post newspapers. It is also common to see vacancies posted on noticeboards in guesthouses and restaurants in Phnom Penh.
People looking for work in NGOs can go to the offices of the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia where there will be vacancy boards and advice available of where else to look.
With regards to teaching jobs, schools will always prefer to meet you before agreeing to take you on. So it’s back to basics, visiting English language schools and handing in your CV; be sure that you give it directly to the director of the institution as leaving it at reception may not guarantee that it is received by the right person.
Recruitment of professionals, on the other hand, is usually organised in advance through international recruitment agencies and job search websites. Not only will you be able to assess the types of jobs available but you can begin networking in the appropriate sectors.
Some large recruitment sites to get you started:
Cambodia Recruitment Agency - You can search through extensive location and industry listings. Many areas are covered, but the majority of advertised positions are in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. There are also tips about CV and cover letter writing and information about interviews. Job seekers can register with the website and update their requirements to tailor their search.
HRInc Cambodia - Many of the same features as above; search by location and job category, however it also gives you the additional option of searching by salary.
National Employment Agency - A site set up by the Cambodian government as a one-stop-shop for employment information. Employers and job seekers are able to see immediately the number of people looking for particular positions. There is also information about training courses and scholarships that are available.
