In Angola, the different medical services on offer are all of a similar standard. That is, clinics or centres tend to be unclean, provide a poor service, and are short in supply. You can expect to pay cash upfront for any health service used, so do ensure that your insurer covers these fees.
Pharmacies
Like medical centres, pharmacies are very rare in Angola and are limited to the capital city, Luanda. All expats are advised to bring the necessary supply of medication from home for the duration of their stay, and arrange replacements. You can find pharmacies located in most hospitals and clinics that are open 24/7. You cannot fully rely on pharmacies to provide you with medication as often, there is a shortage in supply of medication.
Dentists
Finding a dentist in Angola is as tricky, if not even more so, than finding medical treatment. There are very few dentists to aid the population, 0.02 per 1000 people. There is also a severe lack of equipment and medication. Most of the dental practices are confined to Luanda, but they are hard to come across, and you can expect to pay on-the-spot in cash for any treatment.
Ophthalmologists
You will find that ophthalmologists in Angola are in equally poor condition to hospitals and dentists, in terms of equipment and sanitation. The handful of ophthalmologists that do exist are scattered mostly in Luanda.
