Residents may import their own vehicles into Andorra, on the condition that their first vehicle is less than 5 years old. Any second cars must be less than 3 years old, or enter the country under the special dispensation of being a classic, or vintage car.
Vehicles must pass the typical registration revision to ensure that they are roadworthy. They must also be insured by a local Andorran insurance company. Expats will need to pay an import tax of 8.2% when the car is first imported. The receipt is then delivered to the Andorran government who will in turn allow you to collect new number plates and registration documents from the Automobile Club in Andorra .
Public transport in Andorra
Public transport inside the country is limited to taxis and buses. Talks are in place to build a monorail to serve the parishes of Sant Julia, La Massana and Encamp, passing through the centre of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes. However, no decision has yet been made on this matter.
Car hire
Some visitors prefer to hire a car from Toulouse or Barcelona airport, and drive to Andorra. It is worth noting that during the ski season in December to mid April, snow tyres are often required by law in Andorra on some roads. This depends upon recent snowfall.
When organising car hire, ask for snow tyres as these aren’t automatically provided in Spain or France.
Alternatively, you can take a coach and hire a car in Andorra. Most companies will deliver to hotels, and Avis has an office close to the main bus station. In Andorra, snow tyres should be automatically supplied if you are visiting during the winter season.
