How long does it take to learn German?
-
Hi! I'm wondering how long it would take me to learn enough German to work in a professional environment over here.. Any ideas? What are your experiences?

That depends on you..
Hi Miguel! It depends very much on you how long it takes you to learn German. As a rule of thumb, you can take the time it took you to learn English and multiply it by 2 ;o). Most people get a good grip of the language within a year or so...

Don't count on it
I've been in Germany for 2.5 years now and I STILL don't master that language. I mean I can speak and everything, but the grammar is simply killing me!!! MUCH easier to learn English!!

Could you please kindly inform me where I can learn Germany language by Internet? Besides that, I also want to know the formula in typing Germany language.
Thank you very much

Re: How long does it take to learn German?
Hallo!
For those who want to try (wow!) to learn german by themselves I recommend the Deutsche Welle German Course. I think it's the best "do it yourself" language course I've seen:

Kind regards,

It's no piece of cake, but worth the effort
I've been in Germany for four years now and my German is still a long way from perfect. I think though that in a year it's possible to make a huge amount of progress particularly if you are in an environment where you are forced to speak the language every day.
I've also used the Deutsche Welle courses and they are excellent. It's also worth looking into a few podcasts. My German girlfriend and I have a podcast (http://pukkagerman.com) where we concentrate predominantly on German idioms, slang and colloquial language. It'll probably be a little advanced for you but there other more basic ones out there.
(I only just noticed now how old this thread is, I guess you'll be pretty proficient by now!)Tyler 29 Apr 2008, 10:28 - Verstoß melden
