Money from UK to Germany - limits, charges, exchange rates?

• I am expecting to inherit money in Britain, but I live in Germany and would like to have it in Euros in Germany. I have a building society account in Britain, but not a current account with a high-street bank. I am British but am not allowed to open a new account as I am no longer a resident of the UK. How can I shift my money? The building society will only issue a cheque and will not transfer electronically. What charges can I expect? How does the exchange rate compare with transfers or changing cash? Are there limits on the amount that can be taken from the UK to Germany?
